The American Chin is a commercial body-typed animal. The arc of the back is to start at the base of the ears and gradually ascend to the highest point at the middle of the hips and then continue down to the base of the tail. The body is to be of medium length with well rounded hips, and well filled out loins and ribs. The body of a show animal is worth 30 points. The head and ears and appointed 8 points and are to be well proportioned. The upper tip of the ears is to have black lacing apporximately 1/16 of an inch in width. Feet and legs are worth 5 points and are to match the body color. Fur is awarded 25 points and is to be 1 1/8 to 1 3/8 inches in length. The fur is to be very dense, have a gentle rollback and be bright, smooth and glossy. The overall color of an American Chinchilla is worth 25 points. Of these 25 points, 5 are given to the under color, 8 to the rings and definition, and 12 to the surface color. The undercolor of the fur is to be dark slate blue at the base with a pearl intermediate band and a narrow black band. On top of these rings, there is to be a very light band brightly ticked with jet black hairs. These rings accomplish the beautiful Chinchilla color. The remaining 5 points go to the condition of the animal.
